New Perspectives: a Santur Recital and talk by Roozbeh Nafisi

The program will further introduce a new approach to the art of santur
performance focusing on new extended performance techniques. The
performance will be delivered, after a pre-performance talk, in two
parts with a short break in between.

- Part One: Improvisations About Tradition
- Part Two: Improvisations Beyond Tradition

Next to striking the strings of santur with his mallet-tips, Roozbeh
likesto involve some extended performance techniques to get a more
colorful variety of sounds from his instrument.

Roozbeh Nafisi began studying the performance of santur in Iran (1988)
under Mahmoud Safdari and laterArdavan Kamkar. As a teenager he wrote
his earlier compositions for this instrument.
After studying music
theory and composition (with Prof. Leo Eylar) at California State
University, Sacramento he continued his study of music composition at the Hochschule für Musik Trossingen (with Prof. Norbert Fröhlich) under a fellowship from Germany until 2006. His other teachers include
Prof. Andrew Imbrie on composition and Miss Elizabeth Barton on performance techniques.

At the moment Roozbeh spends his time in California performing,
composing, and teaching. He has just completed a series of concerts in
collaboration with the Indian santur maestro Tarun Bhattacharya and
the tabla virtuoso Arup Chatterjee.
