Iranican's 2nd Annual Bone Marrow Drive

Marrow Flier

This years event is being held to support thousands of people in need of bone marrow transplants. We would like to strongly encourage you to give this matter some thought as we are doing this drive in honor of a young Iranian man who has been told he needs a transplant and unfortunately his family are not a match. Perhaps it is you, your neighbor, co-worker or friend. Please tell all of your loved ones about this drive as I’m sure this family and thousands of other families will appreciate it. Testing is simple, in the sense that there is no blood work involved, they will only need to swab your cheek. You will then be placed on the donor registry and will contacted if you match a patient in need. For more information on this process please visit the National Marrow Donor Program website, www.marrow.org. For those of you who are not located in the bay area but would like to be on the donor registry, please visit the website and find out how to get the swab kit mailed to you or find a local drive. To help our friend in need, email your Marrow Registry ID # to marrow@iranican.com
Thank you,
Behnoush Babzani

Artists Insight: Women, Art & Politics--Remembering, Rhyming, We Won't Stop

The Way That We Rhyme: Women, Art & Politics
Curated by: Berin Golonu
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, SF
First Floor Galleries
Mar 29 – Jun 29, 2008

Organized by YBCA, this exhibition showcases the politically charged work of a new generation of women who use creativity as a form of empowerment and a means for making social change. Emphasizing performativity, collaboration and coalition building, the artworks spotlight the daring of women who unapologetically assert themselves, and project their identities out into the world to address a range of issues from the personal to the global. While the works are influenced by the feminist ideologies and activist movements of the past, including the anti-war, pro-choice and environmental movements of the 60s and 70s; the gendered, multi-cultural identity politics of the 80s; and the rebellious Riot Grrrl punk music movement of the 90s; they also speak loudly and clearly to the issues facing women right now. Adhering to the notion that there is strength in numbers, The Way That We Rhyme culls together work from women of differing backgrounds and disciplines to highlight the common goals of their practices.

Artists include: Lisa Anne Auerbach, Andrea Bowers, Nao Bustamante, Tammy Rae Carland, Vaginal Davis, Eve Fowler with Math Bass, Deborah Grant, MK Guth, Taraneh Hemami, Miranda July and Shauna McGarry, LTTR, Leslie Labowitz and Suzanne Lacy, Aleksandra Mir, Laurel Nakadate, Shinique Smith, subRosa, SWOON and Tennessee Jane Watson, The Counterfeit Crochet Project organized by Stephanie Syjuco, The Toxic Titties, Jessica Tully, and RiotGrrl zines from the Independent Publishing Resource Center, Portland.

Identity Shifts
Panel discussions
Saturday May 29th, 3-5
3 pm Screening Room
Artists Insight: Women, Art & Politics--Remembering, Rhyming, We Won't Stop
FREE with gallery admission or performance ticket
Join us for a panel discussion that brings together artists Nao Bustamante, Tammy Rae Carland, Taraneh Hemami and Laurel Nakadate from The Way That We Rhyme exhibition to speak about their bold and unapologetic engagement with history, identity and politics. These artists riff, rhyme, provoke, and inspire. At the same time, they embrace the significance of personal history and collective memory. The panel is moderated by Tina Takemoto, Associate Professor of Visual Art and Critical Studies at CCA.

Human Rights Law Fundraiser - Banafsheh Akhlaghi

Dear Friends,

Most of you are familiar with Banafesheh and her amazing work, and for those of you who are not familiar, please read the paragraph below for a brief introduction and visit the NLSCA website for more info.

The purpose of my email is to ask you, your friends and your organizations for help. I'm working with Banafesheh and her team on a fundraiser event for her organization. Almost all the times, NLSCA provides pro bono services to its clients. Grants and donations are the only ways this organization can survive and continue its amazing work.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, 2008 at Green Room in San Franciso War Memorial Building, and we need as may volunteers as we can get. We need people right now and at the event. If you are interested in any ways, or know any one who might be, please contact me as soon as possible. We don't have that much time and there is a lot of work that needs to be done. Please remember what Banafesheh is doing and fighting for is something that we all need to support and be concerned with.

I thank you in advance for your kind support and generosity.

Cheers,

Sheri Amiri

The Next Chapter of the Civil Rights Movement
Under the policies to fight terrorism, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian people in the U.S. continue to face institutionalized discrimination and widespread suspicion. Recognizing that these political and cultural changes have become systemic, NLSCA was established as a nonprofit organization to advocate for those hailing from the 24 nations targeted by the U.S. government in the wake of September 11th. In the footsteps of other civil and human rights struggles, NLSCA pursues legal remedies and exposes the injustices of current government policies while working to relieve our nation's populace of damaging common prejudices. In this context, NLSCA has inaugurated a new civil rights legacy in California and in the nation - inspiring this country to fulfill its promise of a just society for all.

Iranican Bone Marrow Drive

Dear all,

A few friends of mine are doing a bone marrow drive in a couple weeks in order to get donor registration amongst Iranians. The reason behind this is because to help victims of bone marrow cancer the necessary donor must either be a relative or be of the same ethnic background. In the past few weeks I have personally received news that there are 4 Iranian children (between the ages of 16-22) who are afflicted with bone marrow cancer but are finding difficulty finding a donor match that would help them survive because not enough Iranians are signing up as National Marrow Donors.

The friends of mine, who call their organization Iranican, are doing a donor drive in two weeks specifically to resolve this problem. However, to do so, they need financial help and because they aren't a 501(c)(3), major philatropists aren't donating to them. I am asking each one of you to please donate $50-$100 to "Iranican, Inc" in order to be used for the bone marrow drive. This money will go directly into registering donors and will not be used for anything else. You can send those checks to me, either by mail (1916 Lyon Ave., Belmont, CA 94002) or hand it to me in person. I usually don't reach out like this for money, but to be honest one of my best friends was a victim of bone marrow cancer and was helped because of an Iranian donor. So please help out and email me if you have any questions.
Thank you all again,

Nema
