As part of her academic training, in 2003, Sholeh was able to travel and live in Tehran for nearly a year. During this time, the importance of studying multiple forms of violence against women and children and discussing the roots of its persistence in contemporary Iranian socio-cultural context took precedence over anything else. In this vein, she witnessed and in a couple of occasions was granted the opportunity to work closely with a number of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) and various individuals who whole-heartedly worked to bring forth the issue of violence and its gender-based form to the center stage of public awareness. She will share with us some of her own observations in this regard and to introduce and encourage us all for further communications and collaborations with our friends in Iran. Sholeh has received her BA in Anthropology from UC SANTA CRUZ in 1994 her thesis was on Homosexuality among Iranian Diaspora. She got her MA in Cultural Anthropology in 2000 from Berkeley (had to do with Weber and Kant, as Two iconic Modern thinkers), She is DEWGS Scholar at B. Bain Foundation (Designated Emphasis on Women, Gender, and Sexuality ) and she is finishing up her dissertation research on relevant subjects in Tehran.
