On Friday December 26, 2003, at 5:26 AM local time, a moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5, struck the ancient city of Bam in Iran. More than 43,000 people lost their lives and an additional 20,000 were seriously injured in this earthquake. A significant part of the city of Bam was destroyed and many buildings collapsed and more were severely damaged and became uninhabitable, leaving about 100,000 homeless in the region. The Bam Citadel (Arg-e-Bam) was destroyed. The loss to hospitals, schools and infrastructure was substantial. Dr. Ostadan and
Dr. Moghtaderi-Zadeh have visited the earthquake stricken area.
They will discuss some scientific and engineering aspects of this devastating earthquake specifically, and the earthquake problem in Iran in general. Various aspects of earthquakes,
such as plate tectonics, seismicity, seismic hazards, geotechnical issues and structural performance will be discussed in this presentation.
