ZARBANG Iranian Rhythms
World Music Institute presents:
Iranian Rhythms
Zarbang
Saturday, May 17, 2008 8:00 pm
NYU Skirball Center
566 LaGuardia Place at Washington Square South
Zarbang, comprised of the finest percussionists from Iran, brings its innovative sounds to New York for the first time. Its music, meditative as well as ecstatic and trance-inducing, draws upon Sufi and ancient Persian rhythms, and includes vocal and percussive sounds from the zoorkhaneh (marital arts training center) tradition. The instrumentation includes a wide array of drums -- including the tombak, daf, dammam, dohol, zarb-e zoorkhaneh, and zarbang udu (the ensemble’s new creation inspired by the Nigerian drum) -- as well as santur (hammered dulcimer) and ney-anban (double-reed pipe). Zarbang features Behnam Samani, Pejman Hadadi, Javid Afsari Rad, Mehrdad Arabi Fard, Reza Samani, and Morshed Mehregan (zoorkhaneh spiritual guide).
Tickets $30; WMI Friends $25; Students $15
7pm Pre-concert talk for ticket holders only with Pejman Hadadi
