Berkeley Lecture Series in conjunction with Taraneh Hemami’s exhibition of THEORY OF SURVIVAL

Artist in Residency at the LAB presents:

A gathering to view and discuss the archival material, primarily of Iranian Student movement from 1960-1982.

This has been a very interesting exhibition of letters, documents, leaflets, pamphlets, newspapers, magazines and books gathered in one place. A unique and thought provoking collection.

Exhibition ends on Friday April 18. However, Berkeley Lecture Series has been able to hastily organize an impromptu gathering in San Francisco on Sunday April 20 while the materials are still at the LAB.

Date: Sunday, April 20, 2008
Time: 3:00 P.M.
Place: 2948 16th Street @ Capp, San Francisco

We are hoping to have several people talk about their personal experiences. And we are looking forward to a very lively discussion.

We particularly welcome the participation of anyone involved at that period of Iranian history.

Theory of Survival is a residency at the LAB with Taraneh Hemami that invites a cross generation of Iranian and Iranian-American artists to engage with an archive of posters, publications, and documents belonging to the Iranian Students Association of Northern California, active from 1960-1982. During the residency the project turns the gallery space into an evolving laboratory for exchange and collaboration, exploring the unique collection that reflects local history of Iranian immigrants in these politically critical years. The archive which includes numerous publications, theoretical discourse, original essays, translations, as well as newspapers and documents will be processed for partial contribution to the Library of Congress and the main library at Stanford University at the end of the residency. Theory of Survival is a continuation of Hemami`s CrossConnections project that engages the Iranian and Iranian-American diaspora community in an intergenerational, creative dialogue exploring issues of cultural identity, preservation, and representation.
