Iranian Alliances Across Borders to Host First Iranian-American Student Summit

Boston, MA (April 2, 2008) - Iranian Alliances Across Borders is pleased to announce its first Iranian-American Student Summit, to be held during the weekend of April 4-6, 2008 at Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA. The Iranian-American Student Summit will bring together representatives from eleven different universities for a weekend of exploring the challenges, goals and successes of Iranian-American student organizations.
The Iranian-American Student Summit aims to provide an opportunity for student leaders from around the country to get to know other Iranian-American student leaders, promote increased communication between student groups, allow students to reflect on shared challenges and strategies for running an effective student organization, as well as inspire them to re-imagine the role that student groups can play in the American university community and the Iranian-American community at large.
Project Manager Shabnam Sharbatoghlie explains, "IAAB's Student Summit will bring together board members of Iranian student organizations from universities and colleges around the country to engage in open dialogue with one another, to learn from each other, and to assess ways in which Iranian student organizations can provide an increased level of support for the greater Iranian community. Our hope is that through bringing student leaders together, they will form lasting connections with one another, as well as a strong network that they can rely on in the future."
Beyond discussions and group activities, the Summit will host several leaders of the Iranian-American community who will speak about their experiences, including: Ms. Banafsheh Akhlaghi, President and Founder of the National Legal Sanctuary for Community Advancement (NLSCA); Ms. Mahdis Keshavarz, Principal of The Make Agency and Director of Media and Public Relations at BoomGen Studios; Ms. Niloofar Nouri of The Persian Center at Berkeley and Founder of UC Berkeley's Iranian Student Cultural Organization; and Ms. Niaz Kasravi, Director of Community Relations for the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans.
The Iranian-American Student Summit is made possible in part by a grant from PARSA foundation. For more information about the Student Summit, please visit www.iranianalliance s.org/summit. For further inquiries, please contact summit@iranianallia nces.org.

BAB’AZIZ-- THE PRINCE WHO CONTEMPLATED HIS SOUL

    Bay Area - San Francisco Friday - April 4, 2008     12:00 PM

This highly anticipated film's release will be on Friday, April 4, 2008 at Landmark's Lumiere and Shattuck Theatres. (Further Details Below)

A visual poem of incomparable beauty, this masterpiece from director/co-writer Nacer Khemir begins with the story of a blind dervish named Bab’Aziz (Parviz Shahinkhou) and his spirited granddaughter, Ishtar (Maryam Hamid). Together they wander the desert in search of a great reunion of dervishes that takes place just once every 30 years. To keep Ishtar entertained, Bab’Aziz relays the ancient tale of a prince who relinquished his realm in order to remain next to a small pool in the desert, staring into its depths while contemplating his soul. As the tale of the prince unfolds, the two encounter other travelers with stories of their own. Filled with breathtaking images and wonderful music, Khemir has created a fairytale-like story of longing and belonging, filmed in the enchanting and ever-shifting sandscapes of Tunisia and Iran. Tunisian director Nacer Khemir's past cinematic achievements include the award-winning features "Les Baliseurs du Désert" (The Wanderers of the Desert), awarded Grand Prix of the Festival des Trois Continents in 1984, and "Le Collier Perdu de la Colombe” (The Dove's Lost Necklace), which won the Special Jury Prize at Locarno in 1991.

“A structurally audacious fairy tale that imparts moral lessons and shows how narratives reflect and shape life… cinematographer Mahmoud Kalari frames the dunes, rock formations and sandblasted village and cities with a poet’s eye, turning real spaces into dreamscapes.” –Matt Zoller Seitz, New York Times

“The breathtaking desert landscapes that dominate Nacer Khemir’s beautiful, elliptical Middle East drama deserve the big screen… you’ll remember the dreamlike state the film induces long after the credits roll.” –New York Magazine

“Cinematographer Mahmoud Kalari infuses the screen with sumptuous yet unemphatic colors, filtered through sun and wind and sand. There’s nothing forced about Bab’Aziz; its ideas resonate quietly, building to a breathtaking climax.” –Sheri Linden, LA Times
