The Legacy of Forugh Farrokhzad--40 years later

    Bay Area - East Bay Wednesday - April 9, 2008     05:00 PM

Poet and literary translator, Sholeh Wolpé, will be presenting her brand new translation of Forugh Farrokhzad poems, SIN: SELECTED POEMS OF FORUGH FARROKHZAD (University of Arkansas Press, 2007). She will also read from her new book, “Rooftops of Tehran”.

“Wolpe’s translations make Farrokhzad’s poetry burst into life in English. Wolpé is the best imaginable guide to this gifted Iranian woman’s poetic universe.”

–Nasrin Rahimieh, Director of Dr. Samuel M. Jordan Center for Persian Studies at UCI

“Sholeh Wolpé’s selection of poems and the lush lucidity of her translation convey the quickly evolving and the richly paradoxical nature of Farrokhzad's poetry.”

--Farzaneh Milani, Director of Studies in Women and Gender and Professor of Persian and Women Studies at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville

This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the acclaimed Iranian poet Forugh

Farrokhzad’s death. Around the world, people are marking the passage of this

remarkable women’s life and her more magnificent oeuvre of poetry.

    Description
Time to have another gathering, more of a happy hour at one of my favorite spots just down the street from me. There is street and garage parking, and <1 block from CalTrain, how can you say no? There's wine, beer, and sake-based martinis, plus pretty good food.

RSVP early and often so I can have an idea if we have an appropriate venue. Email/call if any questions.

    DIRECTIONS (GoogleMap It!):

City folk: It's at 3rd/Townsend, 1 blk from ball park. Muni/cab/drive.

South bay travelers: Either Caltrain to SF, come out on townsend/4th exit, walk towards 3rd, it's about 100 ft before 3rd on the north (left side). Or take I-280 in until it turns into King St, left on 3rd, left on Townsend, just on your right after that turn.

East bay: Cross bay bridge, take folsom/fremont exit, go right, and go straight across onto 1st. Right at Harrison, left on 2nd, right on Townsend until you cross 3rd, it's on the right just after the intersection.

ps, I'm trying to secure the right front area with the couches/coffee table, but they don't usually book that after 530... but they've let me get away with it as long as people start showing up at 6 to fend off others. So, at least a few people being on time will be good!
