02:00 PM » Zanan Meeting with Ziba Taghipour a Behavioral Marriage and Family Therapy Intern

Salaam Bar Hamegy and Happy Nowruz,
Our next Zanan meeting will address questions like:

1. Can Western psychotherapy be effective in bringing about positive change in the life functioning of Iranian individuals, couples, and families?
2. What to look for when choosing a psychotherapist for yourself or your child?
3. What factors affect the outcome of your psychotherapy?
4. What do research findings indicate about the role of medication in improving clients mental health?
5. What are the most common practices in the field of psychology?
6. How do you know that your therapy is working?

Ziba Taghipour, our dear guest, is a Behavioral Marriage and
Family Therapy intern working with families, couples, and children
at Santa Clara County and other non-profit mental health
organizations. In April's gathering, she divides the time of the
meeting into two different sections. In the first section, she will
address some of the most frequently asked questions (see the list
above) by Iranian individuals, couples, and families about the role
and effectiveness of Western psychotherapy in improving mental
health of Iranian individuals and families. In the second section, she
will introduce her interpretations of and approach to human
suffering, called psychopathology by conventional psychology. In
this part of the meeting, she will use some examples of techniques
used in her practice to demonstrate her approach to mental health. At
the end of each section, there will be a few minutes for questions
and answers. The content of this meeting will be informational and
not therapy.

Background For The Benefit
For the past 13 years, Iranian.com has been an unbiased forum for hundreds of authors, artists and others to share their stories, essays, poems, cartoons, thoughts, feelings, pictures -- and many other expressions of the living culture. It operates with one full-time editor (Jahanshah Javid) and volunteers who contribute their time without pay. The site operates on a breakeven basis, based on modest revenues from advertising -- it's basically a labor of love.

In 2007, the old site was unacceptably primitive. It did not have any of the modern tools that readers wanted -- things like comments, blogs, on-site search, and the ability to upload content for consideration. Therefore, Iranian.com borrowed some money and commissioned a major overhaul on the site. Unfortuneately, that effort went over budget, and the funds raised were completely used to deliver the site that you see today.

The community wants and deserves more! It wants a vibrant community calendar. It wants directories that will help members find Iranian businesses and community resources or organizations. It wants better / faster news coverage, more music features and better support for mobile access. If Iranian.com is to serve the needs of the community in the 21st Century, it simply MUST build and provide these "Web 2.0" features.

The net proceeds from the Benefit Dinner and Concert will be used exclusively to build out the technology on the site in order to better serve the community. Your help is appreciated.

Major contributions would be welcomed and credit on the site itself is available to significant donors.
