Shirin Ebadi recently became the first Iranian woman to be awarded a
Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting human rights and democracy
in Iran. With this award and the recent devastating earthquake in
Bam, the eyes of the world have turned once again to Iran and its
social and political challenges. What will be the immediate and long-
term impacts of the earthquake? What is the status of human rights
in Iran today? Is Iran moving toward democracy? The country's
conservative Islamic government and its constitution are theocratic,
and yet many intellectuals insist that the democratization is
possible from within the system. Does religion have a place in
Iranian politics, and if so, what should its role be?
What is the status of U.S.-Iran relations, and how is this
relationship being impacted by the war in Iraq and the ongoing
American military presence in the region? Concerns remain over the
direction and purpose of Iran's weapons program--will the country
emerge as a nuclear power, and if so, how will this impact Iran's
regional and global power relations? As Iran continues to open up
economically to the world, how is the country dealing with domestic
concerns, including poverty and unemployment?
Please join us for a timely and informative briefing on the
political, economic, and social developments in Iran today.
