Muir Woods:

Just a short drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods is the home of giants, namely the ancient forest of Redwoods. Muir Woods is a hiker's and nature lover's paradise. Miles and miles of trails will take visitors through pastoral Olema Valley with its steep trails and old-style farming buildings. Stinson Beach is a good place for a chilly Pacific swim, but only from May to mid September. Muir Beach is a tight little cove with sweeping vistas of the Pacific Ocean.

We will take the Fern Creek Trail To Camp Eastwood:

3 miles round trip, moderate. You'll find a resting spot off Fern Creek Trail, which travels along lush Fern Creek through a forested redwood canyon. Look for the trail head sign a quarter-mile past Cathedral Grove and, a short distance later, Kent Tree, a 220-foot Douglas-fir favored by William Kent, who donated Muir Woods to the U.S. government. After following the stream for a mile, you'll find drinking water, restrooms, tables and sunshine! This spot, named the "Alice Eastwood" camp, is the original terminus of a "gravity" rail car line that carried passengers to the top of Mt. Tam and, by the draw of gravity, down into Muir Woods in the early 1900s. The Plevin cut, originally part of the rail line, will bring you back to the main Muir Woods trail.

Directions from San Francisco to Muir Woods National Monument, 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, is reached by U.S. 101 and California Hwy 1. Roads to the park are steep and winding; vehicles over 35 feet long are prohibited.

The monument is managed by the National Park Service and is open year round from 8:00 am to sunset. The monument is busiest during the weekends and the middle of the day. For the most solitude we recommend visiting during weekdays, morning hours and late afternoons. For information, write or call Muir Woods National Monument, Mill Valley, CA 94941 415.388.2595. Entry fee required - $2 per Adult (17 and older). Golden Eagle, Golden Age and Golden Access Accepted.
