Benefit Concert to Help the Victims of Iran Earthquake
A Night of Poetry and Music

“Friends of Persia” in association with Iranian Students at Washington University is sponsoring a benefit concert on Sunday, September 30, 2012, at Steinberg Auditorium in Washington University at 6:00 PM to raise money to help the victims of the twin earthquakes that devastated rural villages in northwest Iran. Many of the victims are women and children who were injured under the rubble of falling homes as the quakes struck 11 minutes apart in late afternoon, a time when most men were still outdoors working in this agricultural region. More than 20,000 people have been left without homes, over 400 have died and many are still missing since the tragedy on August 11.
As part of Saturday’s event, Dr. Nader Majd, a scholar in Sufism, will introduce the audience to Rumi and his mystical theology, then reciting some of his love poems in English and Farsi while playing his Tar, a Persian long-necked, waisted instrument. Dr. Majd is the director of Center for Persian Classical Music and Chakavak Ensemble in Washington D.C.. He will be joined by Dr. Ali Analouie, founder of the SAMA Ensemble, on Persian drum. A few local Iranian musicians will accompany Dr. Majd in this event.

It is often said that the teachings of Rumi are ecumenical in nature. For Rumi, religion was mostly a personal experience and not limited to logical arguments or perceptions of the senses. Creative love, or the urge to rejoin the spirit to divinity, was the goal towards which every thing moves. The dignity of life, in particular human life, was important.

The nation of Love has a different religion of all religions — For lovers, God alone is their religion.
