    Europe - UK Saturday - June 9, 2012     07:30 PM

    Festival of Arts
proudly presents Hamed Nikpay for the first time in UK

A fusion vocalist, & multi-instrumentalist, Nikpay’s electrifying voice has mesmerized audiences throughout North America, Asia & Europe. His music, richly layered with soulful melodies, combines his Persian musical traditions with the Latin rhythms of Flamenco and the fluid beats of jazz. These melodies, combined with lyrics from both classical and contemporary poets such as Rumi, Emad Khorasani, and Fereydoon Moshiri are moving and linger with the audiences for a long time. Accompanying him is a world class ensemble of artists with eclectic musical background creating sounds that blend east and west musical elements; they are Farhadi on Soprano Sax, Ellis on Percussion, Narezo on Flamenco Guitar and Clerks on Bass.
The rapturous music of Hamed Nikpay is further intensified with esthetic performances by the international artist, dancer/choreographer Shahrokh Moshkin Ghalam, who has enthused audiences with his unparalleled & inspiring performances throughout the world, and renowned artist/dancer, the multi-talented Karen Gonzalez.

    About this concert:

The region of Kermanshahan within the province of Kurdistan has a very distinct and ancient culture. Music is held in high esteem in this territory and the depth and diversity of the music make this region one of the most important within the musicology of Iran. Certain unique qualities of the tanbur music of Kermanshahan, such as those found in the intervals, rhythms, and melodic cycles, lend support to the view that this music bears close resemblance to the ancient music of Iran.

Meditative improvisation blends with centuries-old compositions in this collection of pre-Islamic Yarsan religious music, thought to be one of the most ancient, deep-rooted musical traditions in the world.

The tanbur has always been considered a sacred instrument associated with the Kurdish Sufi music of Western Iran.

Blended together with the traditional Persian vocals, this concert will be a meditative journey through an ancient sound.
