    Nowruz Celebration with SHAMS ENSEMBLE

    New York Sunday - March 13, 2011     05:00 PM

Iran’s acclaimed Shams Ensemble, influenced by Sufi, Kurdish and Persian classical traditions, performs mesmerizing music incorporating the poetry of Mowlana (Rumi). Founded in 1980 by Kaykhosro Pournazeri, Shams was the first group to compose music specifically for the ancient Kurdish tanbour lute. This program of new works for Nowruz, the Persian New Year, features a tanbour orchestra composed of Pournazeri and his two sons, Tahmoures (composer, barbat (ud) & tanbour) and Sohrab (composer, kamancheh (spike fiddle) & tanbour), with Neda Khaki, one of the first female tanbour players, Hamidreza Taghavi on santour (zither), Kemal Ceylan on sorna and balaban (reeds), Hussein Zahawy on daf, dayrereh, dohol percussion and Shahab Paranj on percussion. The brilliant young vocalist Alireza Ghorbani and folk dancers appear as guest artists.

Promotional support provided by Persian Arts Festival.

    $45, $55
