Celebrating Birth of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) - Milad Nabi

People of All Faith and Traditions Are Invited To Celebrate the Occasion of Milad Nabi - Birthday of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) at Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California (ICCNC)
Program starts with Prayer followed by Dinner, Lecture in English by Br. Haj Rafic, Classical Persian Music by Faraz Minooei (santur), Behfar Bahadoran (tar) and Shahin Gorgani (percussions), and Salawat and Mystical Chants by Shaykh Yassir Chadly
About the Speaker:
Hajj Rafic is originally from Lebanon, moving to the US in his teenage years. He is well versed in Tafsir al-Mizan by Allame Tabatabaei, the works of Ayatollah Abul Hassan al-Isfahani, Shaykh Mufid, Kulayni, al-Hurr al-Aamili as well as many other scholars. He frequently enjoys quoting one of his favorite books, Oddatol Daee (The Asset of the Supplicant) by Allame Helli, which can be found online in English at duas.org. In the 90s he attended UC Santa Cruz where he completed his Bachelors double majoring in Anthropology and Mathematics. During this time he was also a Muslims community organizer in the Bay Area and Central Valley, offering his religious services, lecturing, educating, and working with especially the youth and convert Muslim populations.
About the Performers:
Faraz Minooei was born in Tehran and began playing santur at the age nine. While studying with Behnam Mehrabi, he found a deep spiritual desire to study music and saw music as an "unexplainable souvenir from the eternal truth". Faraz received his B.A. from San Francisco State University in 2008 as a Nagle Scholar and the first World/Jazz music major with santur as his primary instrument. As a full-time musician, Faraz is an active performer, composer, ethnomusicologist and a teacher. He has performed with many ensembles in the United Sates among which was the collaboration with the Silk Road Ensemble with Yo Yo Ma and Kayhan Kalhor, for the 50th anniversary of the Lincoln Center in 2009.
Behfar Bahadoran an accomplished musician was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1988. He began his musical journey at the age of 8 by taking violin lessons from maestro Homayoun Khoram for four year. He also studied daf with Arsalan Sedigh and Ramin Rahimi and started to play daf professionally when he was only 12. At age 14, he fell in love with and found his voice in tar which he began to self-teach along with setar for the years to come. Behas has performed in numerous concerts throughout Iran as well as in Germany, Sweden and U.S.A.
Shahin Gorgani, was born in the Bay Area in 1988 and raised in Iran. At the age of 15, along with his sister Nasim, he started taking Daf lessons from V. Massahzadeh, and later, Tombak lessons from M. Banaei. Shahin also studied with H. Rezaei-nia, a Daf virtuoso who helped him develop a deep connection with the magnificent music of his homeland. Shahin returned to U.S. in 2008 where he continued his Tombak studies with Shahab Paranj of the Shams Ensemble and also started collaborating with Meehan Ensemble. Shahin toured with the famed Shams Ensemble in 2009. He feels deeply grateful to all his teachers for giving him the inspiration and for showing him the path for excellence.
Shaykh Yassir Chadly has been the imam (spiritual leader) at the Masjid-Al Iman a multi-cultural Sufi-oriented mosque in Oakland, California since 1992.His unique blend of deep spiritual subjects combined with Sufi Folk traditions and his own distinctive sense of humor has made him an extremely popular lecturer around the Bay Area on subjects such as Islam, transformation and Sufism. He is currently an adjunct professor at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and has taught workshops at The California Institute for Integral Studies teaching classes on Islam, Sufism, The poet Rumi, and Sufi Storytelling and the art of sermon.
