Al-Asr Presents

16th Al-Asr Short Vacation Course to Iran

Sun 20th Jul - Sun 17th Aug 2008

The Short Vacation Course (SVC) is a summer course to the Islamic Republic of Iran headed by Hujjatul Islam Maulana Syed Sabzwary. Our experience has shown that while living in the West, it is often difficult to develop the ethical and moral values of Islam taught by our Holy Ahlul-bayt (as). The objective is to provide young people with a suitable environment to learn about their religion.

By the grace of Allah (SWT), this trip has been held annually since 1993 and over 1000 youth have participated from Europe and North America.

This course includes Ziarats of Imam Ali Reza (as) and Bibi Masooma (sa), daily classes, sightseeing and many other cultural, social and religious activities in Mashad, Qum, and Tehran. SVC also gives you the opportunity to meet Muslim friends from around the world.

The SVC is limited to 60 participants aged between 16-25. The registration will take place on a first come first serve basis, so register today to avoid disappointment.

This package costs £750 for UK participants or $1500 (U.S. Dollar) for USA/Canada participants and includes return flight from London Heathrow to Tehran, accommodation, food, local flights and travel. (USA/Canada participants should make their own travel arrangements to London Heathrow).

06:00 PM » Featured Cultural Events - HAALE - Psychedelis Sufi Trance Rock

The City of Redwood City presents

FEATURED CULTURAL EVENTS

Free Cultural Events on Courthouse Square in Downtown Redwood City

Saturday July 20 - 6pm-8pm

2200 Broadway

Haale (pronounced like *hal•le*•lu•jah) evokes both the spiritual and traditional culture of her parents' homeland of Iran, and the energy of psychedelic rock and roll from the sounds of New York City, where she was born. Her music and her message are formed by the powerful combination of these influences, invoking both a swaying trance and a rock sensibility she describes as "Psychedelic Sufi Trance Rock."

Haale's debut recordings were released on her own DarYaRecords in January to critical acclaim. The two five-song EPs exemplify her dual personality. The "Morning" EP is sung mostly in Persian and features the words of mystical poets Rumi and Attar, while the drone-folky "Paratrooper" is primarily in English. On her latest breathtaking full-length debut, "No Ceiling" Haale explores themes of transformation and evolution, singing in English and Persian through a riveting soundscape of percussion, psychedelic guitars, and soaring strings.

07:00 PM » Strunz & Farah - Improvisational World Acoustic Guitar Ensemble

Improvisational World Acoustic Guitar Ensemble

>> Strunz & Farah

Sunday, July 20, 2008 7pm $30 adv./$32 door

Renowned for their expressiveness, technical mastery, and original compositions, Strunz & Farah will present a night of guitar music replete with refined, exotic wildness. Strunz & Farah's music may best be described as international acoustic instrumental improvisational guitar music, or as some have called it, ethnojazz. Innovative and original guitarists Strunz & Farah, performing together since 1979, have created an entirely new expression for the acoustic guitar. Decades ahead of their time, they originated an exotic style that incorporates the cultural riches of their native lands: their meeting marked the first time Latin American and Middle Eastern music came together on the guitar. Originally from Costa Rica and Iran respectively, Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah infuse their ethnic roots along with flamenco, classical and jazz elements into their highly virtuosic, rhythmic, and improvisation-rich original instrumental music, dazzling audiences and influencing guitarists worldwide. They remain the undisputed masters of the form they created.

Their current ensemble is a quintet, comprising, along with the two acoustic guitars, woodwinds, bass and percussion, all world-class musicians. The many laudatory reviews they have received, from both the English and Spanish-language press, speak for themselves. They have worked with many renowned world music artists and have recorded as guest artists with artists such as Joan Baez and have recorded and performed with Jackson Browne, and have shared the stage with artists such as Miles Davis, Chick Corea, George Benson, Kenny Loggins, and many others.

Strunz & Farah’s albums have sold well over a million records worldwide, and several of their works have topped the Billboard World Music charts, won Billboard World Music Album of the Year and have received a Grammy nomination. Jorge Strunz has received two Presidential awards from the government of Costa Rica for his cultural contributions and originality. To listen to Strunz & Farah is to savor the harvest of one of the most unique yet enduring and harmonious musical collaborations in the world of the guitar.
