Thursday, December 21st, we will present a family performance and gathering to celebrate the winter solstice. The holiday called Shaab-e Yalda (lit. the longest night) is an ancient tradition celebrated with family and friends who gather to share music, stories, poetry, food, and dance. Bring family and friends to join us in celebration.

Come and meet with friends for a delicious potluck buffet of traditional food and performances at this warm family gathering. Performances will feature traditional music, dance and poetry performed by the professional dance and music ensembles, Ballet Afsaneh and Nejad Music Ensemble, as well as selections performed by student groups from the Alborz Farsi School, Nejad World Music Center Youth Orchestra and the Afsaneh Dance Academy and DJ Mehrdad. Admission is free but you must call or email to RSVP so we can add your name to our guest list. This will be a wonderful event, a time to enjoy family time and a perfect way to introduce the community and the tradition of Shaab-e Yalda to new friends and neighbors of the Bay Area.

Anar is hosting a Shabeh Yalda event in honor of the ancient Iranian celebration of the winter solstice. In the spirit of Shabeh Yalda, we will celebrate the longest night of the year by reciting poetry, enjoying music and food, and of course, sharab (wine).

We would like to invite all Iranian-American poets to present their spoken and written art at this event. We hope you will choose to be a part of this unique opportunity to demonstrate a creative and progressive image of Iran and Iranians in the U.S.

To participate in the poetry reading, please submit your contact info and a sample of your work (if possible) to aidin@anarsf.com by Friday, December 15th, 2006.
