The Iran Crisis: Fact vs. Fiction

    New York Wednesday - June 21, 2006     07:00 PM

Three years ago we were misled into an invasion of Iraq, with over 2700 US soldiers and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians killed. The drums are beating yet again as the Bush Administration relentlessly pursues a new crisis with another oil-rich Middle Eastern nation, Iran.

Why is Iran the next target? Is the issue really a threat of Iran developing nuclear weapons? Is Iran a threat to international peace? Has Iran violated the terms of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty? Is Iran a key sponsor of state terrorism? Why does the fourth largest producer of oil in the world need nuclear energy?

What is it about Iran that place it in the headlines year after year ? What is it about Iran that makes it such an intractable problem? What makes Iran such an important prize for the U.S.? What does history tell us about Iran?

    Speakers:

Ervand Abrahamian, Distinguished Professor of Middle East History, at the City University of New York.
