    The Reading Series at the International Center welcomes three writers who will read and discuss their latest works:



    ALICIA ERIAN, Egyptian-American author. She is the author of a short story collection, The "Brutal Language of Love" and the novel "Towelhead". Her work has appeared in Zoetrope, The Iowa Review, The New York Time Magazine and other publications. She has also sold the film rights to Towelhead which will be directed by Alan Ball, the director of the film American Beauty.



    JULIE OTSUKA, Japanese-American author of the novel "When the Emperor was Divine". She is a graduate of Yale and Columbia University. Her novel was translated into six languages. The book was a finalist for the Barnes & Noble "Discover Great New Writers Award" (2003), a winner of the Asian American Literary Award (2003), and longlisted for the Orange Prize in England (2003).



    BETTY SHAMIEH, Palestinian American author of the critically acclaimed plays "Roar" and "Chocolate in Heat".

    She was selected for the 2005-2006 Radcliffe Bunting Fellowship. Her play ROAR premiered off-Broadway at the New Group in April 2004 and was a New York Times' Critics Pick for four weeks. A graduate of Harvard University and the Yale School of Drama. Shamieh is the recipient of the NYFA award, NEA grant, Sundance institute residency, New Dramatists Van Lier Fellowship and a Rockefeller Foundation residency.
