On Monday evening, June 7, 2004, the Third Annual JAMES PARKS MORTON INTERFAITH AWARDS DINNER will honor SHIRIN EBADI, 2003 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Muslim lawyer and judge, for her indomitable efforts for inalienable human rights everywhere, especially for women and children in her native Iran and the developing world; OSSIE DAVIS & RUBY DEE, for their ongoing commitment to human rights and social justice and the elimination of racial stereotypes, and for their legendary careers on stage, television and in film; PHILIPPE PETIT, artist of the air, whose high-wire walks are sacred acts of incomparable beauty and imagination and, in particular, his elegy to the World Trade Center, the recently published To Reach the Clouds: My High Wire Walk Between the Twin Towers; SANTIAGO CALATRAVA, chosen architect for the transportation hub at Ground Zero, and ROBERTINA CALATRAVA, for their remarkable multicultural architectural vision and achievements that transcend the boundaries between art and architecture, organic and inanimate form.

Previous Interfaith Award recipients include former President Bill Clinton, author James Carroll, philanthropist Alan Slifka, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the architectural team Nina & Daniel Libeskind.

The Interfaith Center of New York was founded in 1997 by The Very Reverend James Parks Morton, Dean Emeritus of The Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The mission of The Interfaith Center is to promote greater understanding and harmony among people of different faiths, ethnic and cultural traditions; and to make New York and the world safe for religious difference. The Center connects New York’s religious communities with society’s secular institutions; provides opportunities for communities to learn about and from each other; and generates strategies for addressing common concerns.

The James Parks Morton Interfaith Award was created to pay tribute to individuals who have exhibited personal wisdom, courage and commitment to achieving more open dialogue among different faith and ethnic traditions and for understanding that diversity enriches our lives. The award champions intellectual, artistic, cultural and political insight and initiatives and focuses attention on interfaith dialogue as a positive force for peaceful solutions.

The Third Annual Interfaith Awards Dinner will be held on Monday evening, June 7 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, West Side Ballroom, 1535 Broadway (at West 45 Street). Cocktail reception at 6:30 PM; Dinner and awards ceremony at 7:30 PM. Black tie optional. Tickets are $600 and $1,000.
