"Her sacred dance caused almost unbearable ecstasy to rise up within me and burst forth into another world.” ~ Past Workshop Participant

“Part whirling dervish, part flamenco femme fatale, sensuous and audacious, Banafsheh's dance is a mesmerizing foray into the body as trance mechansim; a DNA strand, supple, fluid and noble, come to life.~ LA Times

08:00 PM » HAFEZ MODIRZADEH in concert

Groundbreaking Persian-American tenor saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh collaborates with San Diego jazz greats Peter Sprague (guitar), Gunnar Biggs (doublebass), and Duncan Moore (drums) for an evening of eclectic world jazz at the acoustically-perfect Neurosciences Institute.

Dr. Modirazadeh (aka Modir), currently professor of music at San Francisco State University, has created a way to "construct a purely Iranian American jazz style," by adapting the jazz saxophone to the Persian tuning system. More generally, "chromodality" is Hafez's method of integrating different musical systems, and it has allowed him to work with such diverse musicians as Zakir Hussein, Danongan Kalanduyan, Ramin Zoufonoun, Jesus Hernandez, and the Asian-American Orchestra among many others.

The Neurosciences Institute, 10640 John Jay Hopkins Dr, CA 92121
