Silence and the Feminine Ideal in Iranian Culture
Fiction writer Azin Arefi and textile artist Nazanin Shenasa will present passages from contemporary and classical literature highlighting the concept of silence and alternative forms of self-expression for women in Iranian Culture. The readings will begin with an introduction to medieval poet Nizami's "Layla and Majnun", with readings in English from the epic romance. The character of Layla as the prototype of the ideal woman will be explored by Shenasa in her upcoming installation and performance . Arefi will read her short story from the contemporary anthology, Let Me Tell You Where I've Been, ed. Persis Karim, which voices the new roles of women in contemporary Iranian society. Other poems and stories from the anthology will be read by additional Iranian and Iranian-American authors. The readings will be followed by a open discussion period.
