Commonwealth Club Silicon Valley Presents:

Dr. Shirin Ebadi

2003 Nobel Peace Prize Winner

Dr. Shirin Ebadi has not only been a powerful voice for the reformist movement in the Middle East, but also a champion for human rights and democracy.

She served as Iran’s first female judge until 1979, when religious authorities deemed women unfit to serve in such positions and demoted her to a court clerk.

Dr. Ebadi battled the oppressive regime by establishing an independent law practice and took on challenging cases

that often resulted in political and professional persecution. For her relentless pursuit against political injustice and discrimination,

Dr. Ebadi was arrested several times and endured an assassination attempt on her life.

In 2003, Dr. Ebadi became the first Iranian woman and the first Muslim woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

She still remains deeply committed to representing the oppressed and underserved and will share her vision of democracy for the Islamic world.
