He has spent the past decade working as a journalist in the Middle East and South Asia. He has written for the Economist, the New York Review of Books, Granta, the New Yorker, the Times Literary Supplement, the London Review of Books, the Independent and the Financial Times. His first book, In the Rose Garden of the Martyrs, was published in 2004. He lives in Tehran with his wife and son.
