Shirin Ebadi is Iran's first Nobel Peace Prize winner. The Nobel award committee honoured Ebadi because of her strong efforts to promote human rights and democracy. ‘As a lawyer, judge, lecturer, writer and activist, she has spoken out clearly and strongly in her country, Iran, and far beyond.’
Shirin Ebadi was the first female judge in Iran, serving as president of the Tehran city court from 1975 until the revolution of 1979. She now works as a lawyer and teaches at the University of Tehran. Ebadi is an activist for the rights of women, children and refugees and has long been known for promoting peaceful, democratic solutions to societal dilemmas and taking an active part in public debate. The general public has admired Ebadi’s defence in court of victims of human rights abuses. Furthermore, she argues for a new interpretation of Islam that is in harmony with the universal principles of democracy, equality before the law, and freedom of speech and religion.
