BAIVOTER To Hold CA Congressional District 12 Candidate's Forum

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Arash Alavi arash@baivoter.org

SAN FRANCISCO, CA. February 18, 2004 -- The Bay Area Iranian-American Voter Association (BAIVOTER), an Iranian-American voter education organization in the San Francisco Bay Area, today announced it will be holding a candidate's forum for the California 12th Congressional District primary race.

"This is the first time we are holding a candidate's forum as part of our efforts to encourage and facilitate the informed and active participation of Iranian-Americans in the democratic process," said BAIVOTER Executive Director Niloufar Nouri. She added that the forum would give an opportunity to Iranian-Americans in the district to meet the candidates, ask questions, and hear their views on issues of concern to the community.

The forum will include candidates in the three contested party races for the 12th District in the March 2 Primary Election in California. All candidates in the Green and Republican party primary races have agreed to attend, in addition to the two Democratic challengers to Congressman Tom Lantos, D-San Mateo. The incumbent's office told BAIVOTER Lantos will not be able to attend the forum due to a scheduling conflict. Libertarian Party candidate Harland Harrison is unopposed in the March 2 race.

Conducted in three segments, one for each of the contested party races, the forum will be attended by Green Party's Pat Gray and Barry Hermanson, Republicans Mike Garza and Christopher Huskins, and Democrats Ro Khanna and Maad Abu-Ghazalah. In each segment, the candidates will make a short statement, and will then be given the opportunity to respond to written questions from the audience.

The event is set for the evening of Wednesday, February 25, at the Lane Community Room, Burlingame Public Library. The forum will run from 6:30-8:45 p.m. Doors will open to the public at 6:00 p.m.
