"Into the Sea": A Film Screening with Surfer and Activist Easkey Britton

    Bay Area - Peninsula Sunday - February 15, 2015     11:43 PM

Persian Studies at San Jose State University presents: "Waves of Freedom: How surfing is Bridging Barriers in Iran and Women are Leading the Way"

Easkey Britton is the first woman to surf in Iran and the first woman to surf Ireland’s hell-slab, Mullaghmore. She is also a five-time Irish national surf champion, but Britton's real work lies in protecting a healthy relationship between humanity and the ocean. She earned her PhD in Environmental Sciences in 2013 and since then, when not speaking out about how surfing can jumpstart social change, she’s been working with the European Commission’s Inseparable campaign. She is also active involved with the Rockefeller Foundation on their gender engagement strategy for global marine conservation and Too Big To Ignore, a research network that fights to protect small-scale and sustainable fisheries worldwide.

Most recently, Easkey was named an ‘Agent of Change’ by Surfer magazine in their special Ocean edition (2014). Her work and unique connection to the ocean led her to being asked to talk at TEDx Dublin 2013 about the power of the ocean and surfing to connect and break barriers. Easkey has also been invited to speak on topics such as ‘facing fear’ at Facebook’s International Policy Division and ‘women’s empowerment’ at the Visible Women Speaks series in London. She has presented her work at international conferences and published numerous book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as mainstream media. She is also an Oxfam Hero ambassador and participant at THNK’s Creative Leadership program.
