The complex relationship between the United States and Iran has been one of the most enduring foreign policy challenges for both countries over the last three decades. In her new book, Bitter Friends, Bosom Enemies: Iran, the U.S., and the Twisted Path to Confrontation, author Barbara Slavin provides a fascinating account of how opportunities to settle long-simmering disputes over the past decade were missed due to entrenched political interests and ideological short-sightedness among leaders in both countries. With unparalleled access to high level officials in the U.S. and Iran, Slavin breaks new ground in describing how Iran's reformist turn in the 1990s, the Clinton administration's failed efforts to improve relations, the Bush administration's rejection of serious Iranian overtures in the aftermath of 9/11, the war in Iraq, and the election of hard-line Iranian President Ahmadinejad have all contributed to the troubled state of U.S.-Iran relations.

Barbara Slavin has been the senior diplomatic correspondent for USA Today since 1996, covering foreign news and U.S. foreign policy. She is on leave this year as a senior fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace where she is continuing her research on Iran. Previously, Slavin was the Middle East correspondent based in Cairo for The Economist. Suzanne DiMaggio, Director of the Asian Social Issues Program at the Asia Society, will moderate the discussion.

Shebi Arus: Whirling Dervishes of Rumi - UCLA's Royce Hall

    Los Angeles Monday - December 17, 2007     08:00 PM

    December 17, 2007 at 8:00 p.m.

    UCLA’s Royce Hall

340 Royce Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90095

For over 700 years, each December 17th the Whirling Dervishes have celebrated the “Wedding Night” of the great mystic poet Rumi’s passing from the circle of time—through their legendary whirling prayer-dance, one of the world’s most beautiful and stirring sacred rituals. This year you have a rare opportunity to enter this circle of love as the Mevlevi Order of America presents the prayer-dance (Shebi Arus) of Rumi right here in the Los Angeles area. To the accompaniment of stately yet impassioned Turkish classical music (with sung verses from Rumi), the dervish dancers turn in prayerful surrender, to become vessels for bringing divine blessings to earth. There is truly no way to convey in words how moving and spiritually potent this ceremony is, so we urge you to come and find out. We can’t describe it, but you can feel it!

The whirling prayer-dance will be led by Postneshin Jelaleddin Loras, who comes from Konya where Rumi lived, and who has followed in the footsteps of his visionary father, Hz. Haji Suleyman Hayati Dede, by teaching both men and women the traditional practices of the Mevlevi Sufis. Joining MOA musicians are master Turkish musicians Necati Celik (oud and Middle Eastern lute), Timucin Cevikoglu (vocalist), and Celaleddin Biçer (ney). Celaleddin tours internationally as a Turkish musician, performing in the United States, Bulgaria, Malta, Italy, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. This is a truly unique opportunity.

In the spirit of the universality of Rumi’s poetry, prior to the sema a stellar group of interfaith activists will step up to the microphone with offerings from the Mathnawi, Rumi’s greatest work. A glimpse at the list of readers confirms the diversity of Southern California’s “pursuers of peace”:

    • The Reverend Dr. Gwynne Guibord, Officer of Ecumenical and Interreligious Concerns The Episcopal Diocese Consultant for Interfaith Relations The Episcopal Church USA
